All that was enough to keep her in first place over her competitors (and her sobs afterward showed how much stress she had had to harness to win). Laurence Fournier Beaudry and Nikolaj Soerensen spent six years competing for his native Denmark but moved to Canada in 2018. After injuries and the pandemic, they have hit their stride this season, winning silver at Four Continents; they are currently in fifth place. Lilah Fear and Lewis Gibson, once known as “the Disco Brits,” are vigorous entertainers whose free skates often look like exhibition programs; they are now in fourth place. But Madison Chock and Evan Bates, the US champions, had an inventive Latin-inflected routine to David Bowie’s “Let’s Dance”—and finished first with a season’s-best score. (Charlene Guignard and Marco Fabbri of Italy are in second place; Piper Gilles and Paul Poirier of Canada are in third, looking not at all hampered by Gilles’s recovery from appendicitis.) We’ll be continuing to watch the action through the weekend.
