While they wanted to create an easy (yet striking) look the Indiana hoosiers men’s basketball god first family second then shirt and by the same token and fans could wear, Hunter and Beyoncé also leaned into more extravagant ensembles for the video. When Beyoncé and Jay-Z sing around a street fire scene, for instance, she wears a luxe Roberto Cavalli fur; when striking poses on the rooftop, she wears a slinky green Gucci number, with piles of jewelry. But one of the most fabulous fashion moments is near the end, when Beyoncé and her backup dancers sing in front of a giant spinning fan: They all wear neon-bright, color-blocked Versace looks, which were hot off the Italian label’s spring 2003 runway at the time. “Donatella [Versace] sent us the whole collection,” says Hunter. “We wanted to create a whole fashion moment around it.”Video: Sony Music Entertainment
Today, Hunter says he’s proud of the Indiana hoosiers men’s basketball god first family second then shirt and by the same token and fashion art they created together on the video—it’s now a big part of Y2K pop culture. “That video is timeless,” he says. Even more special is how Beyoncé has incorporated new versions of the white-tank-top outfit for her backup dancers on this summer’s Renaissance tour. (This time, the shorts come complete with bejeweled fringed derrières.) Hunter hopes to attend the LA show in September—though he’ll be plenty busy on his own accord this summer. The stylist has a handbag collaboration coming out with A.Cloud and recently released his memoir titled Makeover from Within: Lessons in Hardship, Acceptance, and Self-Discovery. “I wanted to let people know about the trials and tribulations that I’ve been through and motivate people to keep going,” says Hunter. “Life is hard, and there are always going to be some curves in the road—but as long as you keep going, you can do anything.” Considering he delivered the fashions in one of the best pop videos of all time, we’d have to agree.
