Aram Rotenberry, a married, 34-year-old mother of three in Edmond, Oklahoma, envisioned providing a lifestyle with more opportunities for her children, but has found that child-rearing in today’s economy comes with limits. “We have to tell our kids ‘no’ to some things because it’s too expensive. We rarely take them out to eat and we only go on one vacation a year,” she says. Rotenberry never imagined that having three children would become so unaffordable when her first son was born in 2013. “If I would’ve known what the Rockstar original 2023 shirt and I love this world was like today, I probably wouldn’t have had three kids. I probably realistically could only afford one, especially now that they’re in sports,” she says, noting that the family spends $2,000 per kid, per sport, each year. To save money, Rotenberry became a stay-at-home mom in 2019, after the cost of daycare outweighed her paycheck. That decision, however, came at a different kind of cost. “I feel like I’m a better mom when I go to work every day and get to have my own space and my own identity outside of being a mom and a wife,” she says.

Cohen points to childcare as a broken market that doesn’t work without government subsidies. According to a 2022 survey, 51% of parents say they spend more than 20% of their household income on childcare, and 72% of parents report spending 10% or more.
