It might be the Funny i fucking hate arizona fuck off 2023 shirt in other words I will buy this first playful dog-related detail you see when arriving at the newly renovated member’s club George, but it certainly won’t be the last. Breeze through the entrance area and there’s every chance you’ll be greeted by its resident dachshund, George—an homage to the club’s namesake, the dog owned by London nightlife maverick Mark Birley. Birley founded the Mayfair institution back in 2001, but his portfolio of clubs, including the extravagantly designed and reliably star-studded Annabel’s, was purchased by hospitality mogul Richard Caring in 2007. Caring, in turn, not only oversaw the 18-month refurbishment of George but designed it alongside his wife, Patricia. An impressively wide-ranging collection of works by David Hockney that once hung the walls of the original club have happily found a new home within the space, while guests descending the gilded spiral staircase to the basement will note an enormous sculptural mural of a hound’s face created by artist Jill Berelowitz. And if any real-life tail-waggers decide to make their way to the club on a Saturday evening, they’ll find their needs catered to just as fastidiously as any of their human counterparts—including a menu of snacks curated just for them that includes, yes, “dog caviar.” Photo: Milo Brown

The club’s canine-focused charm not only serves as a design motif, but also speaks to the Funny i fucking hate arizona fuck off 2023 shirt in other words I will buy this more personal nature of the project to the Carings. “George is synonymous with dogs, and Richard and I have a soft spot for them—we have five of our own,” Patricia says. It was partly this that guided their decision to oversee the interior design scheme themselves. “We always had a particular image in my mind [for renovating the club], but we found this extremely difficult to get across to anyone else, so we decided the best way would be for us to do it,” says Richard. “We felt the only way we could have achieved the outcome we had in mind is if we led the project as if it were our own home, working closely together with our family of employees,” Patricia adds. Indeed, many of the staff are returning from its former iteration, including club director Daniele Maccarrone, ensuring there will be plenty of familiar faces to greet its long-time members. While the revamp is significant—even increasing the size of the club by a third through a link to an adjoining building—it retains all of the original’s old-world, convivial charm. Really, it feels less like you’re in a bar or restaurant, and more like the living room of a (wildly wealthy, admittedly) friend. The ground floor, with an imposing solid bronze bar as the centerpiece, continues the navy thread from the terrace across lacquered and paneled dark blue walls, along with the seductive shimmer of burnt gold glass tiles across the ceiling and walls—its sleek and sophisticated trappings offset by the more whimsical touches of Hockney’s artworks. For the Carings, the aim was to gently refresh the design codes of the original, while also lending it a few more of-the-moment touches, in keeping with their ambitions to attract some more creative types to the club. “What we’ve built is a reimagined version of George,” says Patricia, whose vision for the kind of milieu that will frequent it ranges from old-guard members to more future-facing minds from the arts, tech, and finance. Still, she adds, “the spirit of George will remain no matter what we do—because at its core, George is about tradition, family, and heritage.”Richard and Patricia Caring with George’s resident dachshund.
